New month, new inspiration. In search of some relevant and fun content to share with your audience? We’ve got you covered. Every month at AreTheyHappy, we list some of the most important “foodie” holidays and events for you. Here are some ideas for March! ?

March 11th: “The International (Almost) March against Coriander”

Before we start our list, it is interesting to note that March 2018 almost started off with a food-related protest. Lukas De Man, an avid hater of coriander, called for an international protest against the excessive use of coriander on the 11th of March. What originally started out as a joke, attracted thousands of followers from different countries in no time. Fearing that things would get out of hand, Lukas canceled the protest, and removed the event page from Facebook.

Crazy as this might sound, there is a scientific explanation to this aversion: it’s estimated that 4 to 14% of the population possess a gene that makes coriander taste like soap. Even famous chefs like Julie Childs, Ina Garten and Angela Hartnett, have found it far too overpowering. This little herb has always divided people, resulting in countless anti-coriander fan pages and communities online

Alright, without further ado, let’s dive into our list.?

March 14th: “Pi Day” π

The first notable event this month is “Pi Day.” Pi Day is celebrated on the 14th of March all around the world. (Get it? ? 3.14 = March 14th?) An awesome way to  celebrate this never-ending number (3.14159…) and Einstein’s birthday is to eat a crazy amount of… “pie,” of course!

 Recommended hashtag:   #piday or #pieday

What you could do:  Cafes, food trucks, restaurants, and hotels that have sweet offerings on the menu can join in on the fun! You can start by turning your usual “cake of the day” into a delicious “pie of the day.”  Here are some pie ideas. Then, inspire your fans by sharing pictures and / or recipes of your special pie on social media. A couple of lovely examples follow below.

March 17th: “Saint Patrick’s Day” ?

StPatrick’s Day 2018 occurs on Saturday, the 17th of March. It is the feast day of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and a global celebration of Irish culture. How you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day can depend on your type of customers, but in many larger cities, people definitely make plans to visit a bar or restaurant on this day. To make the most of the event, some restaurants hold promotions all weekend, from Friday right through to Sunday.

 Recommended hashtags:  #saintpatricksday, #saintpatricks or #saintpaddys

What you could do:  The day is not only perfect for sports bars and beer pubs, but coffee bars, ice cream parlors and cafes offering all sorts of cakes and cupcakes can benefit as well! St. Patrick’s Day offers creative possibilities for anyone willing to get in on the lime green theme! For Irish pubs and sports bars, this is a great excuse to throw an epic party, and hand out green outfits and crazy wigs to your staff and customers. For those customers who really get into the spirit, and go all out in head-to-toe green, up the ante with a freebie such as a green shot, free #leprechaunsbait, or some other additional service. For decor, throw some shamrocks, rainbows, pots of gold and horseshoes all around the place. Don’t forget the Irish music. There’s plenty of unique (think green) drink and menu items that your restaurant can offer over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Check out these 20 cocktails for Saint Patrick’s Day and 55 Irish-inspired recipes.

AreTheyHappy favorites:   Irish classics like Shepherd’s Pie and Corned Beef with Braised Cabbage always go down a treat. For drinks, honeydew martini with vodka, or Midori and triple sec are awesome twists to the usual selection. #shamrockcupcakes, and any over-the top St. Patrick’s Day cakes and pies are perfect endings to your great meals. Last but not least, if you want to stand out completely: the 17th of March is the one day in the year where offering green beer is 100% acceptable. To invite your patrons to join in on all the fun, make sure at least one responsible adult posts out your St. Patrick’s Day shenanigans! 😉

March 20th: “Here comes the Spring!”

Winter officially ends on the 2oth of March, and though it’ll still be a little chilly, the sun should shine more often, and more occasions will arise to make use of your terrace! Over the next few weeks, winter meals such as stews and mashed potatoes should slowly make room for fresh salads and cold dishes such as vegetable pies and quiches.

What you could do Add some color with typical spring vegetables. Make  rhubarb pies and asparagus and zucchini quiches. Using seasonal spring vegetables and fruits this time of year is not only full of flavor and vitamins, but you will be contributing to the environment by limiting your food miles! March 22nd: “World Water Day”

If you care about the environment, this day will appeal to you as well. The 22nd of March is World Water Day, and on this day some restaurants help bring awareness to and collect donations for water and sanitation challenges faced by children around the world. Through initiatives like the Tap Project, restaurants collect one dollar for each glass of tap water usually served for free and provide these donations to UNICEF. World Water Day is the ideal moment to come up with your own suggestions of fruit water, homemade iced tea and other variations.

 Recommended hashtag:  #worldwaterday #fruitwater #spawater

What you could do:  Consider experimenting with “fruit water,” also known as “spa water,” by adding a few slices of fruit, herbs or even vegetables to a jug of water. Large fruit water dispensers add a colourful touch to the interior of your bar or hotel entrance.
